Farmer's Market and CSA and cherries from my now sold home!

It was another great day at the St George Farmer's Market. My CSA, Cricket Song Farm, gave me another HUGE amount of produce. I am going to get it washed and ready for cooking this afternoon. I always wash the lettuces, get them chopped, and store them in a zip lock bag, ready to make a salad.
Here is a picture of some of the cherries I picked from a cherry tree at my Mapleton home just before going to sign the title over to the new owners. I left them plenty to pick. I have never had this cherry tree produce this many cherries in the 15 years I lived in the home! They are very delicious!
I need to check on the apricots in the next couple of days and start processing them (bottling them or making some jam). What did you get at your farmer's market, garden or CSA?

Farmer's Market Report

Today was the last day of farmer's market this year in St. George. I am really going to miss it. Sigh! Most of the produce vendors are gone, and there were a lot of craft sellers there today. I immediately went hunting for Lea's Micro Market, because I get my sunflower sprouts from her. If I remember correctly, her farm is in Veyo. Anyway, she has terrific greens and sprouts.

Today she had bags of bok choy, greens, sprouts and she had bunches of turnips.

She gave me a taste of the white turnips, and all I could say is "I'll take some!". They are really delicious. I'll use the turnip greens in a recipe also. I also bought a bag of greens and a container of sunflower sprouts (LOVE THESE...yummers!)

From another vendor, I bought some cilantro in a pot. I am tired of paying such a high price for cilantro. I am going to put the pot in my kitchen window, and for $4, I will get a lot more cilantro for the money.
I will use the turnips tomorrow for Sunday dinner, and maybe the greens. Check back on Monday, when I will post about how I prepared them!

Farmer's Market Report October 11, 2008

What a wonderful farmer's market today! It was very cool, mid 50's this morning (cold front coming through the state today) and the vendors all were wearing their northface fleece jackets and beanies, lol! I kept procrastinating my trip out today, so ended up with about 15 minutes to check everything out. These vendors do pack up right at noon, if not a little bit before. There was a great crowd out today though.

As you can see (click on picture to make it bigger), I bought lettuce greens, cherry tomatoes, a small lemon cucumber, peaches, beets with greens still attached, 2 good sized spaghetti squash and some artisan raw cheese. Below is a picture of all of the cheeses they (Finney Farm Home Dairy) offer.

I purchased some basil pesto...uuummmm...yummy, and some feta. I am usually not a huge proponent of raw milk or cheese, but this was really delicious.

Here is a picture (below) of the middle of ancestor square, where the farmer's market is held. The growers are around the grass area on the sidewalks selling their produce/homemade items. Everyone was nearly packed up to go home, but during the market time, there is usually someone there playing some type of music.

The St. George Farmer's Market only goes until November and I am going to enjoy as many more of my Saturday mornings there that I can. Did you go to your farmer's market today? Please comment and put a link to your post.

Farmer's Market Report

Happy Saturday everyone! Today I was able to go to my local Farmer's Market in Saint George, Utah. I love the setting.....Ancestor Square in downtown SG. Today I only had $14 cash on me and no checks, so I went around to all of the vendors first, then decided what I couldn't live without. Note: you can click on the picture which will enlarge it (if you are getting this in your email from me, first go to the blog, then you can enlarge the picture).

My first purchase was the sunflower sprouts. I think that this is my first purchase of every farmer's market trip. I am such a creature of habit! If you haven't tried sunflower sprouts, then you really need to. I love them in my salads or with scrambled eggs. I had a nice little visit with the vendor, Lea's Micro Market. I told her how lame my sunflower sprouts were, and she filled me in on the secret to successfully growing my own. I'll save that for another post....you better come back if you're really wanting to know!

OK, I love the vendor where I purchased the pomegranate. I also got the grapes from her. I always buy things from her.....like the figs in previous visits. If you want to see my previous farmer's market reports, go to my other blog, http://thedesertfleamarket.blogspot.com/ .

On the way out I saw these wonderful onions, and I needed that for the Carolina Crock pot Chicken recipe I am making for Sunday dinner (which also happens to be my DS#1's birthday celebration dinner).

I tasted some terrific refrigerator pickles from a gal named Julie. For $3 a small bottle, I caved in and parted with the cash. Yea, I know, I could make my own, but not having a garden, I am not tempted this year. Maybe next year I'll get something going with a garden.

I had $2 left, and was at the car, and felt impressed to go back and buy the garlic. I got 3 for $1 and then got 3 peaches for $1 from the same vendor. So, I have no more cash, but I do have some lovely produce. I had to take another picture of the grapes, because they look so gorgeous!

I'm off to make a green smoothie. Maybe I'll take some pictures and share the recipe with you!
